After waffling between positive and negative territory throughout the day, U.S. stocks managed -- barely -- to extend their recent gains on Wednesday following a report that the U.S. may hold new trade talks with China that could ease tensions. By the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJINDICES:^DJI ) had risen a modest 0.1%, while the S&P 500 SNPINDEX:^GSPC ) edged just into positive territory.

Oil stocks continued to surge following an attack Tuesday on Libya's state-owned National Oil Corp., with the SPDR S&P Oil & Gas Exploration and Production ETF (NYSEMKT: XOP) climbing another 1.3%. But financials stocks helped pare the market's upward momentum, and Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSEMKT: XLF) fell 0.9%.
